Presentism and Fatalism

چکیده
It is widely believed that presentism is compatible with both a libertarian view of human freedom and an unrestricted principle of bivalence. I argue that, in fact, presentists must choose between bivalence and libertarianism: if presentism is true, then either the future is open or no one is free in the way that libertarians understand freedom. Presentism is the view that it always has been and always will be the case that there are no actual but non-present objects. On this view, dinosaurs and other merely past objects did exist, but there is no sense in which they do exist. Likewise, merely future objects and events (your future grandchildren, for example) perhaps will exist; but, again, there is no sense in which they do exist. Yesterday’s sins are quite literally gone; what tomorrow may bring is in no way actual. It is widely believed that presentism is compatible with an unrestricted principle of bivalence. In particular, presentism is typically thought to be compatible with the view that bivalence holds for sentences of the form ‘S will do A’. In fact, many of the most well-known defenders of presentism will insist on bivalence for such propositions because, as it happens,

Demarcating presentism
This paper argues that recent arguments to the effect that the debate between presentism and eternalism lacks any metaphysical substance ultimately fail, although important lessons can be gleaned from them in how to formulate a non-vacuous version of presentism. It suggests that presentism can best be characterized in the context of spacetime theories. The resulting position is an ersatzist ver...

متن کاملNo Presentism in Quantum Gravity
This essay offers a reaction to the recent resurgence of presentism in the philosophy of time. What is of particular interest in this renaissance is that a number of recent arguments supporting presentism are crafted in an untypically naturalistic vein, breathing new life into a metaphysics of time with a bad track record of cohabitation with modern physics. Against this trend, the present essa...
متن کاملPresentism and Ontological Symmetry
PRESENTISM AND ONTOLOGICAL SYMMETRY Joseph Diekemper Introduction Presentism tells us that since only the present exists, the past and future are equally unreal. But presentism is also motivated, just as any A-Theory of time is, by the common sense intuition that the past is fixed and the future not. It is, in part, this belief in a robust asymmetry of fixity that makes the A-Theory distinctive...

Presentism is the doctrine that the present time is ontologically privileged. According to the presentist, all that exists, exists at the present time; and an object has only those properties it exemplifies at the present time. Those who reject presentism hold that all times are on an ontological par, and the present time is special only because it is the time at which we (or our current time s...
